Windmills of Zaanse Schans and Edam
Zaanse Schans open-air museum is a must and a truly splendid sight for keen photographers. There is an opportunity to visit one of the many windmills, which date back to the 1600's. A short walk in the area, with it's old wooden houses will take you back in time. We then drive on to Edam a 13th century old town, known for it's dairy industry which produces the famous "Edam" cheese. This trade was the source of its prosperity in the 16th and 17th century. Edam lies in reclaimed area (Polders) on the Ijsselmeer. We return to Amsterdam in the late morning.
